Is your area of leadership structured and organized? (109-2)
Written by Barry-Werner on February 16th, 2010. Posted in 1 Chronicles, Genesis, Old Testament, Structure/Organization.

The sun rises and sets every day. The pattern is so consistent that we build charts looking years into the future establishing the time for sunrise and sunset based on the rotation of the earth and the tilt on its axis. The North Star is so consistent in its location that it is used as a navigational reference point in the northern hemisphere. God’s created order has evidence of intelligent design from the smallest living system to the human brain and beyond to the far reaches of the universe. Since we are created in God’s image, it should come as no surprise that leaders need to apply structure and organization to their organization to be consistent and effective. Read 1 Chronicles 27:1-34.

Chapter 27 details one of the best examples of a leader using structure and organization to be effective. David’s administrative abilities shine through in this description of the careful organization of his army divisions, tribal officers and royal overseers. If a leader studied only this chapter and learned to use the principles of structure and organization used by David, they would increase their effectiveness to utilize multiple resources around a common goal.

For those leaders reading this study that will determine to look at Chapter 27 as a teaching tool, the following tiny sampling will help you start your study:

David identified leaders with a skill match for each position.
David created levels of leadership i.e. “heads of families, commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and their officers…” (v. 1).
David delegated authority along with responsibility.
David developed an organizational chart so everyone knew the created order.
David divided the work so no one individual or group burned out.

Most of these leadership studies hit a few highlights or a principle and belie the grind-it-out hard work it takes to truly implement the principle.

To effectively apply the principles of structure and organization from Chapter 27 a leader has some hard work ahead.

Some necessary steps:

Identify the leadership principles in Chapter 27 (such as the tiny sampling above).

  • Determine which of these principles most directly apply to your current leadership situation.
Get selected members of your team involved.
Prioritize the principles to insure your first actions meet your greatest needs.
    Create an implementation strategy.
Communicate the strategy to an expanded number on your team and take their feedback.
Revise the strategy (if necessary) based on feedback from your team.
Develop a plan to implement the strategy to your specific situation.
    Determine action steps.
    Create or revise budgets.
    Create a timeline for implementation.
Determine the evaluation strategy to be put in place.

Leadership is hard work!

Effective leadership in the area of structure and organization can be all consuming until the structure and organization is in place, then it gives freedom only understood by those few leaders willing to pay the price to do it right.

Genesis 1:31-2:1 “God saw all that He had made, and it was very good… Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.”
